Anyone can create a usable website. It takes a graphic designer to make it slow, confusing, and painful to use.

I give a huge to EditPlus! I use it for so many different code styles, including HTML, XHTML, Java, Perl, etc. and the nice thing it, you can config it for custom languages as well!! Worth the admission price.

I have to go with Caz and NoteTab. I have used it for a few years now and have it customized to the teeth. I even balance my checkbook with it!

I used to use TopStyle exclusively, but switched to HTML-Kit a few months ago. I do miss the TS auto-complete though. I like the range of plugins for HTML-Kit, but I dunno, there's just something about it that I can't put my finger on that feels not-quite-right. I think I'm gonna have to have a play with some of the others.

I tried HTML-Kit but like you just didn't feel at ease with it. I found it to be clunky. For CSS I started learning with Stylemaster and have stayed with it - not least for the built in preview in browser functions - being lazy that means that I don't have to start up each of them (including the standalone old IE's that I have ). I also like the notes about browser compatibility as you go. It's not a freebie though but very reasonable.

I use Matrixy2k, http://www.crystalfibers.com, it edits just about everything, the built in page validator saves lots of time (you only have to validate properly when you've finished playing around with the page), and it is free.
