Stylesheet switcher dilemma:
1 site with four different colour schemes which are user selectable. Obviously I want to make sure the site's accessible, but I'm wondering whether I should have stylesheets for the colour and text size (would mean having e.g. normal colour 1, normal colour 2, normal colour 3, normal colour 4, large colour 1, large colour 2, etc.etc.( or just have the stylesheet switcher for colour and give instructions on increasing text size in different browsers. I've done it on a site in the past with colour and size options and it was a b***** to implement (though this time I'm using a different method), so I'm just wondering how important people feel it is to make all the different options selectable "at the press of a button"?
One point that may influence how I implement this - because of it's subject matter the site's likely to have quite a high proportion of visitors with visual problems so I'm conscious that a fair few of them might want to increase the text size - though there's always the argument that in that case they're likely to browse with a larger browser text size as default anyway.
Thoughts anyone?

If I have got you right here FA I would go with the colour more than the font size. Visitors can't change a colour themselves but do have their own facilities to change font size either by browser, mouse etc.

I think That the Duke has it, people with vision problems seem to be a savvy lot and are accustomed to altering their text size without hand holding but colour choices are not possible for them without a switching mechanism. I look foward to a tutorial on this theme at some point too.  |

On the grounds that I'm offering four different colour schemes and when I do use alternative stylesheets for text size I usually offer three different text sizes, I've decided to stick with just offering the colour options for this one and give instructions on altering the text size. I think it would be just too confusing if offered all the options.

I agree with Duke and Caz but I'd also like to add:
You said it's a pain in the a** which I can appreciate but you also said that the site will be viewed by a lot of people with visual impairment. This, I guess comes down to time and cost, but if it were me with no limitation on time and therefore cost, I'd be adding all the options you are thinking of offering.
Why?
Web accessibility is only getting bigger and bigger, the more people who see a well presented site with all the bells and whistles they need, the more likely one of them is to notice your byline and make contact with you to develope other sites!
That's why.

At the moment I'm going for a compromise approach - four colour schemes, one of which is a high contrast larger text version. Technically, doing all the different combinations isn't a problem, but I'm just conscious of not cluttering up the page with loads of different buttons to press. This is only at first draft stage anyway, so after I've got feedback on v1 I can always add in more options.

Is this the IIH one by any chance, Rachel? If so.. going by some of the messages I get about the forum, I would tend to keep it simple. However.. does that mean by offering as few alternatives as possible, or by making text size changes simple?! LOL.. helpful, I know!
Mind you, I know mum (for example) has everything set large on her pc (which is great 'fun' to try and use when I'm used to a high res! lol), and I'm sure most could follow simple instructions for enlarging text.
Btw, once you have the design, let me know if I can help you with adding content. :)

Yep, it is. I sort of got very sidetracked on it with the course and everything so I've not really done anything the last week or so, but I'm hoping to put some work in on it over the next couple of days and I'll post it in the mod's forum over there as soon as I've got something that's viewable.
