Hi! I signed up on this forum this week.

Soz for being so lazy, but I just thought I'd ask if someone could show me any particularly good threads that I should read first, so I can get involved here?

Thanks in advance, Michael

Welcome Michael  G.T.'s wave smiley
I note that you are like the rest of us - lazy, so why not take it easy Behind the Bikesheds with this post, http://www.master-web.org/forums/index.php/topic,156.0.html it shouldn't be too difficult to get into the swing of that thread. For the rest, just dip in anywhere the water's fine and there are no sharks.  G.T.'s nod smiley

I note that you are like the rest of us - lazy...

It seems he is not too lazy - he's just registered on a forum I run, also asking an identical question! Google brings up quite a few more forums (fora?) where he has also just registered. Why? No www link, no obvious spam in message, nor any hidden message. Why does he (and all the rest) bother to do this? It's getting harder to spot the spammers from the genuine new members. Darkside's sad smiley

I'm currently deleting about 20 new members (spammers) per day from my forum. I did have one poster who asked a question ("Where can I get an xyz from locally?"), but answered it himself several days later with a link to a US store ("It's OK, I found one here: www...." etc). Cunning! (I deleted the reply, binned his registration, then explained why, only to get mired in a free speech debate!)

I hope your new method is successful FA. Maybe getting new members to explain the CSS Box Model hack would split the genuine members from spammers G.T.'s ebil smileyG.T.'s giggle smiley

Hey Prawndog you are right about the googling, he does crop up a lot.  G.T.'s NFI (Not Fucking Impressed) smiley I have to say that after the last one hiding links in punctuation I too couldn't see anything suspicious this time. Mind you I don't trawl email addies and ips, that's Darkside's speciality, when he's awake that is.

Unfortunately he's to be found on Planet WoW at the moment - that Taz is a bad influence on him.  G.T.'s NFI (Not Fucking Impressed) smiley

Now I've got the "real world" shit of this week out of the way I'm going to go ahead and install the anti-spammer measures I've been thinking about using. Good idea about explaining the box model hack PrawnDog!  G.T.'s giggle smiley While they're at it they can explain haslayout to me as well...infact I may just set a test. Pass, and you get let in; fail, and you're history.  G.T.'s Laugh out loud smiley

You'd better get swotting up OldHonky G.T.'s wink smiley

On a serious note though, I've just installed the new security measures (very impressively simple). At the moment it's set up to allow access only with the right password, though I'm wondering if some sort of question, like the one on Mike Cherim's lovely spam-proof form might be a better idea. I'll have a think about it...

Rather than a question how about some simple little flash game like for instance hitting a cow's arse with a banjo, then if they progress to the third level they are in.

Accessibility aside, we are NOT installing the Chuckle Brothers* on the forum! G.T.'s wink smiley

Admittedly it's enough to put off all but the most determined and technologically advanced spammers though G.T.'s giggle smiley

Ah, when you're 7* and you are not up to the sophisticated comedy of Elton/Izzard/Gervaise/Python et al, then the Chuckle Brothers just hit the spot!

7 in comedy years, not in actual years. If you can still snigger, and still have copies of Viz around somewhere, then your comedy age probably hasn't reached its teens yet. G.T.'s happydance smiley
